Regarded as the founder of America's first major art movement, now known as the Hudson River School, Thomas Cole's 19th-century paintings of American wilderness dislayed a new-found awe for the majesty of the American landscape. Today, his home and studios in Catskill, New York, are a National Historic Landmark that are open to the public.
