Variations of this cross design are found throughout Ireland and the Highlands of Scotland. This design is a variation of one of the cases found in the ruins of the old nunnery at Iona. St. Columba founded the monastery on Iona in 563, providing the strength and the vision whereby the tiny isle became the ecclesiastical seat of Scotland and the spiritual home of Celtic Christianity.
