Product Description

The cross design is an adaptation from a late Gothic door in the Duke's fortress of Veste Coburg, in the town of Coburg in Bavaria, Germany. The Veste Coburg is one of Germany's largest castles. Built in 1225, it dominates the town from its hilltop. In 1530, the fortress provided refuge to Martin Luther who, as an outlaw, hid here for 6 months during the Diet of Augsburg while his lord, the Duke of Saxony, attended the Diet. Luther was forbidden to attend by the duke, who feared that he would be imprisoned and burned as a heretic. While at the castle Luther continued with his translation of the Bible into German. Coburg was first mentioned in a document dated 1056, although there was a settlement at the site that predates it called Trufalistat.

10" x 6" : Cast Stone, Made in the U.S.A.
