This elegant cross with its three hearts reminds us to seek guidance through the heart, to move through life's joy and tribulations with a compassionate heart. According to legend Boyle town grew up around the hostel St. Attracta, Abbess of Killaraght, founded after St. Patrick passed through the tiny settlement in AD 435 and told her that it needed better accommodation. Legend also says, St. Patrick tumbled into the River Boyle and cursed the spot where he fell and the fishing has been poor there since then. Next to the river on the northern edge of town is Ireland's most impressive example of a 12th century Cistercian church, it was founded in 1161 and consecrated in 1218.
