Product Description

Lt. Richard E. "Dick" Cole was Col. James Doolittle's co-pilot in plane #1, first plane to launch from the carrier U.S.S. Hornet, first plane to bomb Japan, in what is arguably the greatest air-raid in the history of aviation. The photo here depicts plane #1 with General Doolittle and Lt. Cole in it, taking off from the deck of the Hornet on that historic day, 18 April 1942. After flying 650 miles to deliver their bombs on Tokyo, Cole and crew headed southwest across the China Sea for mainland China. Just after arriving at the coast they climbed to 8,000 feet and the entire crew bailed out during a storm when the fuel warning lights came on. Forced to parachute into enemy territory, Lt. Cole and crew evaded Japanese capture and were re-united with the other survivors of the raid. For his action Lt. Cole received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and many other decorations.
