Monks were trained in this time-consuming and exact art during the Middle Ages, resulting in paintings the size of postage stamps in the many Books of Hours made for reigning nobility. Only a select few are able to hand-paint, stroke by patient stroke, these miniatures of classic botanical art. Captured under hand-cut domes of solid crystal, they become truly jewel-like works of miniature art with vibrant colors painted in minute detail. Admittedly these paperweights are mass-produced, although their boxes have been hand made. Set on the ivory background, they make beautiful gifts at very affordable cost.
