Decorating a house with holly leaves comes from early beliefs that the holly leaves averted evil, lightning and demons. Early Americans developed their own uses for the leaves. Teas were brewed for measles, the ashes of leaves were used fro another tea to ease whooping cough and combined with the bark, a hot poultice was made for broken bones and dislocations.
